A NEW RENAISSANCE OF ART BEYOND THE COMMERCIAL & COMMONPLACE
HARLEM COLORS NEWS...Harlem Hospital Center (2 or 3 train to 135th Street) recently completed a full city block wide, 6-floors high, illuminated mural of classic African American art commissioned by the 1930's U.S. Works Progress Administration (WPA) infrastructure economic stimulus. The enormous artwork is a sample of paintings by Harlem Renaissance artist Vertis Hayes reflecting the arts, sciences, history, energies and rhythms of working class Harlem. By sheer size, it is America's largest and most prominent example of a fine art painting on a public edifice. Earlier and newer Harlem artworks will be displayed within HHC's nearly 300,000 square feet of newly built spaces. It is a massive visual reminder of local artists, architecture, and taxpayer dollars culturally enhancing urban life. >>
Harlem's city block, 6-floor high, backlit Vertis Hayes mural on Malcolm X Boulevard (from 137th to 136th Streets) reaffrims its status as a major U.S. arts hub.
